The other AET and I went to see Sweeney Todd with one of our JTEs yesterday. It was my first time in a Japanese movie theater, so there was a little bit of culture shock. The tickets cost twice as much (and the seats are assigned), the food costs half as much (but no delicious butter-flavored ooze on the popcorn ;_; ), and the floors are spotless.
I know it's not a film for everyone, what with the music and brutal violence, but I think Tim Burton did a really masterful job with it. Especially the "By the Sea" sequence, which was wonderful. And one thing I absolutely love, and consider a mark of a really well-crafted story, is when the viewer/reader is led to discover the Big Twist on their own just before it's officially revealed. And I wonder, who was worse, Todd, or Mrs. Lovett? At least he was insane, whereas she was completely devoid of any morals. At any rate, the story really makes you think about how the desire for revenge can destroy a person.
On a side note, I'm usually not made queasy by movie violence, but I did find parts of it kind of hard to watch. Actually, the only movie that ever made me feel physically ill from the violence is Raging Bull. Even Le chien andalou, perennial squicker of film students, didn't bother me that much, but I couldn't deal with Raging Bull. Weird, huh?
Now I'm in the mood to watch more movies.... I want a good action/adventure, but Indiana Jones doesn't come out until June. *emo* Enchanted looked intriguing, but I thought it was probably stupid and not worth the ticket price, but then I looked it up on Rotten Tomatoes, and apparently it's quite good? So maybe I'll go see that.
ALSO SOMEONE PLEASE TELL ME WHEN IS THE KNIGHT RIDER MOVIE AIRING? I NEED TO GET MY BITTORRENT READY. :O

Date: 2008-02-03 02:50 pm (UTC)Although I have doubts as to whether they would come out in Japan, No Country for Old Men and There Will Be Blood are both incredible, although they're basically exceptionally well-told stories about pure evil. But, this month Be Kind Rewind comes out in the US, which looks like a really good comedy that might make it to Japan. Otherwise, nothing good comes out till May, as usual.
Japanese movie theatres are awesome. The nicest one I've been to is the Toho Cineplex in Osaka that's in the Marui department store at the entrance of Nankai Namba station, as it was only built maybe a year and a half ago.

Date: 2008-02-03 02:55 pm (UTC)I'm planning on seeing Kurosagi, there was a trailer for that before the Sweeny Todd movie when I went to go see it. Apparently it's about a con artist who cons other con artists. XD It looks terrible but the lead is good-looking.

Date: 2008-02-03 03:20 pm (UTC)Depending on the movies there are als lots of cute Japanese exclusives available for sale too. I've seen postcards, movie programs and for LotR and HP there were all sorts of pins and keitai straps. I got some extras of the LotR ones and sold them on eBay for a profit
