I was checking MangaFox's update page, and saw a series called Neko no Koi listed. Naturally, I'll check out anything that has to do with cats, so I click. Bonus: it's BL. Double bonus: it takes place in Kyoto. I'm pretty excited about that, so I start reading. And.

Well, first of all, the scanlator used Electroharmonix to represent a traditional Japanese storefront sign. In my opinion, fonts like that are pretty offensive to begin with, but I could at least give it a pass if this were some kind of acid neon dystopian future Tokyo. For a traditional Kyoto machiya? Um no, what the hell.

But, I thought, maybe I'm being a little too sensitive.

And then it got so much worse.

"You jez told them that it warn't too sweet."

"'Cawse it is, this 'ere shop has been passed down for six generations." (That first word is supposed to represent "of course", btw.)

"If'n you sit dere, your kimono'll git dirty."

"Imma always be wit'chu, Chii."

WHAT THE FUCKING HELL IS THIS. YOU FAIL. DO NOT PASS GO. DO NOT COLLECT $200. YOU MAY NOT USE YOUR GET OUT OF FAIL FREE CARD. I almost don't know which is more offensive, the idea that all Kansai-jin talk like Cletus the Slack-jawed Yokel trying to teach himself AAVE, or that, even if the analogy were accurate, this is still a complete failure of an attempt to write out a dialect. NO ONE on the entire planet talks like that. Oh, and the extra brain-numbing bonus? All four of those lines come from the same character. Just seriously, I don't even.

In far less ragey news, Shounen Maid broke into the top 500 at MangaFox. It was within the top 200 before OneManga closed, then it got pushed back to like 8000. Anyway, chapter 6 is here or here.

This is why I pretty much stopped reading manga forums.

"And plus, it would seem silly to tag a story, such as this one, where the main character is a boy working as a maid, as Shoujo. It just wouldn't work that way, nor would it fit. Just plain Shounen, possibly. But Shoujo? I think not."

After I explained Manga Genres and What They Mean:

"But isn't it silly to put what's to be directed for the audience as the genre of the story?
That'd be like putting a yaoi as "Shoujo" if it's directed to female audience, don't you think?
I'm probably misunderstanding your logic, but meh, it happens.

I'd still say this story is leaning more towards Shounen-Ai than it is Shoujo, only because:
I.) The main character is a young boy.
II.) The sub-main character is an older hot guy.
III.) Even though there's no sign of romance, there's a possibility that some might develop in here. So far, only 5 chapters are shown, but we don't know yet.

I'm sticking with my thoughts and opinions, but that's just me. (:"

I don't even know how to respond without being bitchy about it. It doesn't help that this person also thinks little boys being raped is ~*soooooooo kawaii*~.

I finally made my decision: Pokémon White. I was leaning towards Black, but seeing the BW anime previews after the movie changed my mind. In motion, Reshiram's tuft looks even more like a penis. In contrast, Zekrom's tail has an electrical turbine in it! How cool is that? So, as usual, I'm going with the version that has the legendary that I like more.

By the way, the movie was sooooooooo boring. The plot is completely nonsensical, but basically there's a guy who wants to fist the Ass of Time.

Anyway, now I have another decision to make! I still have 4 days left on my Seishun 18, so from August 27th to 29th, should I go to Kanazawa, or Takayama? In either case, I'd go Friday night and come back Sunday night.

[Poll #1607453]

Actually, since the ticket is good until September 10th, I could do both, but I wouldn't be able to take a half day off on the 3rd. It would also mean missing half the Kansai Queer Film Festival. Hmm...

Now to go do chores, and NOT spend the whole evening reading Hourou Musuko, which is >o<.

[edit] Ehehe.. so I went and decided to do both. ^^; Takayama from the 27th to 29th, since it takes longer to get to, and Kanazawa on the 4th and 5th. I just now booked my hotels.

I also ended up reading another 30 chapters of Horou Musuko. >.>

Finished Shounen Maid chapter 4. I'm uploading the chapters to mangafox, but I realized that no one is going to redistribute them to other sites if they can't download them. ^^; So I made [livejournal.com profile] sweetspotscans. I know, "real" scanlation groups have their own hosts and IRC and all that, but I don't have time for that shit.

Anyway, if you want to join a super-lazy scanlation group/possible doujinshi circle, just let me know. ^^ All you need is a candy-related nom de plume.

My wrist has been bothering me lately. :x Probably because of my crap computer set-up. I bought a brace today at the drug store, and it seems to be helping a lot. Of course what I really need is a computer desk, but that won't be happening until I clean my apartment. *sigh*

So many things to catch up on. *sadface*

"Sickish" turned into an all out cold. The upside of this: tea. I bought some tea at Lupicia a while back, because even though I'm not a tea drinker, it smelled just too good not to try it. But I hadn't drunk any, because who wants to drink tea in the middle of summer? So today I tried it for the first time. Oh. My. God. Amazing. I've been drinking Fantasy and Peach Melba, and they are both the best thing you can put in a cup. No way can I go back to choking down Lipton after this.

After weeks of training, I've finally evolved my Pupitar into Tyranitaur, which means I've now completed Gen I and Gen II of my pokédex. Current count, 461 seen and 436 obtained. Goal: complete pokédex by Sept. 18.

I have a new manga obsession: Shounen Maid. I saw this at Animate, but didn't buy it, because it was in the BL section, and this is Japan. It turns out that my fears were well-founded, as a few minutes on google told me that there's a completely unrelated manga with almost the same name ("Shounen Maid Kuro") which is hardcore shota rape/torture porn. >_< DNW. But Shounen Maid itself is adorable! And not shota at all, at least not yet. (After all, this is Japan.) It's about a neat-freak grade schooler named Chihiro who's sent to live with his rich, emotionally needy, boderline-hikikomori uncle when his mother dies. Chihiro was taught by his mother that he should always work honestly for everything, so he refuses to live off his uncle's money. Rather than force him to stay against his will, Chihiro's uncle offers him a job as his housekeeper, and lols ensue. The art is amazing. Since the current trend in porny manga is "screw plot development, put sex in the first chapter" (a rant for a different time), I'm pretty sure that if this was going to get skeevy, it would have already gotten skeevy. That's what I keep telling myself, anyway. The first two chapters are scanlated here (not very well, since they got the uncle's name wrong when the furigana is right there), and raw scans of the first two volumes are here. If I wasn't already overwhelmed with stuff, I would totally scanlate it myself. I might anyway. I LOVE that Chihiro is not being forced to work as a maid, or being taken advantage of in any way. And it's pretty sad that that's something I find refreshing in a manga.
