I've had a terrible headache the past two days, and looking at the computer screen makes me feel not too good, so I'm just going to copy and paste the write-up that I did for [livejournal.com profile] sterilizationqa.

~~

At my pre-op appointment, my doctor did a pelvic exam and determined that my uterus was so small that he felt he would not have enough room to place the Essure coils properly. So we gave up on the Essure plan and went with an old-fashioned laparoscopic tubal ligation. Incidentally, because my uterus is so small, it is likely that if I were to become pregnant, I would either miscarry or have severe complications, so it reinforced that this was the right decision for me. (Not that I needed any reinforcement, but it did help my mother accept it.)

My surgery was scheduled for 7:30 AM, so I had to be at the hospital at 6. After about ten minutes in the waiting room, a nurse took me to the pre-op room, where I changed into the hospital gown and slipper socks and did the pee-into-a-cup thing. The nurse brought heated blankets and started my IV, and I played my GameBoy while I waited for the anesthesiologist. I had to sign some papers, and then they put the anesthesia in my IV and wheeled me off to the operating room. All my stuff was kept on a shelf under my bed, so I was never separated from it, which was cool. When we got to the OR, I scootched from the bed onto the operating table, and was out like a light.

I came to about quarter to ten. The nurse said the operation went very well, and brought me crackers and ginger ale. However, my throat was so swollen and dry from the breathing tube that the crackers were very near impossible to eat. I managed to get enough down for them to give me a Percocet, which didn't seem to do much. At that point the pain was like bad period cramps, which steadily became worse as the anesthesia wore off. I asked for a heating pad, and they gave me one, which helped a little. I slept for a bit, and managed to pee a little, which satisfied the nurse, so they helped me get dressed and sent me home.

I slept for a little bit, but was woken up by kill-me-now-plz cramps. I was really miserable, but managed to eat enough chicken soup to be able to take another Percocet, and when that kicked in, I felt SO much better. I was still cramping, but it was no worse than a regular period. I spent the rest of the afternoon napping and reclining, and had a normal appetite for dinner.

When I woke up about 10 that night, the cramps had stopped, but the incisions were very sore. I took another Percocet, knitted for a while, and went back to sleep. I woke up again around 3, and my entire abdomen felt very bruised and tender, as if I had been punched in the gut several times. Getting in and out of bed was quite painful, but there was not much pain while I was lying down.

I spent most of today napping and lying around knitting and playing video games. The pain is pretty much the same, and the swelling is not too noticeable. Toward evening I began feeling a little loopy and not-good, which I think was mostly a combination of caffeine withdrawal and forgetting to take my regular daily medication. I had a soda and took my pill, and started doing more things for myself instead of lying around so much, and felt much better. I've been having minor vaginal bleeding, but not enough to need a pad. (Thank GOD they didn't need to use The Clamp.) I'm also running a very slight fever, but not enough to cause a concern.

One thing I was unprepared for was how dehydrated I'd be after the surgery. At times, it was more annoying than the pain. But all in all, it's well worth it. I just have to be very careful about how I sit and put my pants on. I'd like to celebrate by watching this week's Supernatural, but I hear Dean's bare shoulder makes an appearance, and I don't think I'm quite strong enough for that yet. ;) For now, I'll just lie in bed with a good book and some yummy ice cream and continue to take things easy for the next few days. :)

Unfortunately, I am still deprived of shoulderporn because there is something about my computer screen that makes my headache a lot worse. Plus the sitting upright thing doesn't feel too good either. I'm supposed to go back to work tomorrow, but I don't know if I'll be able to or not. But I've already used two sick days this year.... :/ *sigh* Sucks either way. :P
