Back home. Brain is being useless at converting from vacation mode, as usual. (And icon is so true, especially when traveling in Japan. I had mine with me the whole time!)

Lonely Planet can bite me; Hirosaki is well worth visiting. I had a great day today. I walked around the castle, went to the Neputa museum, saw a Tsugaru-jamisen performance, and rode a free rental bike through the temple district. For lunch, I had an apple (40 yen! Crazy!), apple pie, and apple vinegar with honey.

Yesterday was great, too, even though it involved a whole lot of sweating and an unfortunate encounter with a cow's tongue on a stick. Matsushima is beautiful, and the train ride from Morioka to Odate was lovely. Even though it was total BFI without even a separate track for each direction, it was the nicest local train I've ever been on. It even had a bathroom AND a trash can! Plus, Morioka Station has a Jupiter, so I was able to have a Dr. Pepper during the ride.

So sleepy, and need to get up early tomorrow to head back down south. And just think, today was my relaxing day. x_x

In Sendai now, and feeling much better. Thanks to everyone who sent well-wishes last night. The group of Italian girls at the capsule hotel gave me some medicine, which almost made me take back all the bad things I had thought about them.

Sky Tree is not as impressive as it should be, actually. That's because the framework is so massive that it looks like it's much closer than it is. It's not until you get really close that you realize, oh, that steel beam that I thought was two feet across is actually six feet across. It's hard to believe that it's already much taller than Tokyo Tower, and it's only 2/3 finished.

Sendai seems like a nice place. The local specialty here is beef tongue, but after seeing a picture of how it's served, I decided my stomach wasn't up to it. The train ride here was lovely once we left Tokyo's urban sprawl. I took a little detour into Gunma-ken, just so I can mark it off my list of prefectures. That means this trip will take care of all of Kanto and Tohoku.

Must shower before bed, bleh. Want to sleep.

Why do two of the most amazing and wonderful people I have ever met have to be leaving within a week of each other?

And why am I not in bed yet?

Finished Shounen Maid chapter 4. I'm uploading the chapters to mangafox, but I realized that no one is going to redistribute them to other sites if they can't download them. ^^; So I made [livejournal.com profile] sweetspotscans. I know, "real" scanlation groups have their own hosts and IRC and all that, but I don't have time for that shit.

Anyway, if you want to join a super-lazy scanlation group/possible doujinshi circle, just let me know. ^^ All you need is a candy-related nom de plume.

My wrist has been bothering me lately. :x Probably because of my crap computer set-up. I bought a brace today at the drug store, and it seems to be helping a lot. Of course what I really need is a computer desk, but that won't be happening until I clean my apartment. *sigh*

So many things to catch up on. *sadface*

Holy clusterfuck:

http://community.livejournal.com/sf_drama/2980518.html

This pretty much encapsulates everything I hate about [livejournal.com profile] sf_drama. (Yes, I've deleted my membership, but I still keep looking whyyyyyyy.) Notice how anyone pointing out facts like, no, 'otaku' does not mean 'serial killer', gets immediately shot down for racism and cultural appropriation, while everything [livejournal.com profile] hontou says is untouchable because she is really Japanese! Really really, except for the fact that she's actually just a disgustingly overprivileged white girl with a bad case of yellow fever. Of the three things that sf_d hates the most (privilege, cultural appropriation, and weeaboos*), she's the worst offender, but because the Alpha Posters Who Must Not Be Contradicted made up their minds in the beginning that she's an oppressed minority aghrsfghahertaheurt I can't even form any more words.

While "hive mind" is usually a term used by idiots who get their asses handed to them en masse on sf_d, it really is true. You can not dissent from the majority opinion unless you yourself are an Alpha Poster. Anyone who tries will be immediately buried under the latest sociological buzzwords, no matter how reasonable their view is. I don't like what you have to say? Never mind a response that requires actual thought, I'll just pull out "tone argument" and be the automatic winner. And then all the Alpha Posters will have a big circle jerk about how much better they are than those other people who dare not have the same opinions as them. If you're wondering how one becomes an Alpha Poster, it's of course by dogpiling others under the latest sociological buzzwords.

SF_D can be a great source of information, not to mention entertaining drama, but yeah, soooooo had it with the "you must think like us or else" popularity bullshit.

(I'll admit that I did laugh heartily at a "Japanese" person telling an(other) American how horrible they were for appropriating a Japanese word.)

*Note, of course, that if you are an Alpha Poster, it's perfectly fine to like anime and J-Pop. Anyone else who has so much as eaten sushi is a weeaboo.

TOY STORY 3 = BEST MOVIE EVER

Work/my mom/this cold is driving me FUCKING CRAZY.

"Sickish" turned into an all out cold. The upside of this: tea. I bought some tea at Lupicia a while back, because even though I'm not a tea drinker, it smelled just too good not to try it. But I hadn't drunk any, because who wants to drink tea in the middle of summer? So today I tried it for the first time. Oh. My. God. Amazing. I've been drinking Fantasy and Peach Melba, and they are both the best thing you can put in a cup. No way can I go back to choking down Lipton after this.

After weeks of training, I've finally evolved my Pupitar into Tyranitaur, which means I've now completed Gen I and Gen II of my pokédex. Current count, 461 seen and 436 obtained. Goal: complete pokédex by Sept. 18.

I have a new manga obsession: Shounen Maid. I saw this at Animate, but didn't buy it, because it was in the BL section, and this is Japan. It turns out that my fears were well-founded, as a few minutes on google told me that there's a completely unrelated manga with almost the same name ("Shounen Maid Kuro") which is hardcore shota rape/torture porn. >_< DNW. But Shounen Maid itself is adorable! And not shota at all, at least not yet. (After all, this is Japan.) It's about a neat-freak grade schooler named Chihiro who's sent to live with his rich, emotionally needy, boderline-hikikomori uncle when his mother dies. Chihiro was taught by his mother that he should always work honestly for everything, so he refuses to live off his uncle's money. Rather than force him to stay against his will, Chihiro's uncle offers him a job as his housekeeper, and lols ensue. The art is amazing. Since the current trend in porny manga is "screw plot development, put sex in the first chapter" (a rant for a different time), I'm pretty sure that if this was going to get skeevy, it would have already gotten skeevy. That's what I keep telling myself, anyway. The first two chapters are scanlated here (not very well, since they got the uncle's name wrong when the furigana is right there), and raw scans of the first two volumes are here. If I wasn't already overwhelmed with stuff, I would totally scanlate it myself. I might anyway. I LOVE that Chihiro is not being forced to work as a maid, or being taken advantage of in any way. And it's pretty sad that that's something I find refreshing in a manga.

I don't think I've mentioned it here, but one of my main sources of stress is that my parents sold their house and are moving to North Carolina. The main reason for this is that they fangirl some fundie Christian speaker who lives in NC, and have thus been convinced that NC is the land of milk and honey. But I'm very amused that the town next to the town they'll be living in is called Gay. Anyway, this means that every day, I get long, frantic e-mails and/or phone calls from my mother about what of my stuff that's in the basement should be gotten rid of, and what should be put into storage. I also need to do stuff like change my permanent address, and I don't even really know how I'm supposed to go about that.

Skipping Japanese class right now because I'm feeling sickish and it's monsooning out. Got some cute shirts on sale at Peace Now and Algonquins yesterday with [livejournal.com profile] rkold. One of them doesn't fit, but I'll keep it around as inspiration to exercise more. I was very good and didn't buy any skirts, only tops.

For Japan peeps, I've got my Toy Story 3 ticket, and WILL be going opening day (7/10). Probably to T-Joy, since it's the closest to Kyoto Station, and also their sound system is spectacular. Who's with me?

I woke up this morning from an awesome Kyou Kara Maou! dream in which Conrad had been kidnapped, and Yuuri went into total ass-kicking mode to get him back. Not exactly Maou-mode, because even though he was powered-up, Yuuri was still totally himself, just pissed off and taking names. It was so cool.

Except then it was 4:30 in the morning, and I couldn't fall back asleep. ;_; Then, when I finally fell back asleep at 6:30, I overslept, couldn't find any suitable clothes to wear, and had to skip stopping at 7-11 in order to get to work on time. And since it's exams now, the cafeteria was closed, so I had to eat overpriced Calorie Mate from the vending machine for breakfast.

Calorie Mate is exactly as appetizing as it sounds, although it's not something to help athletes put on muscle, which you might guess from the name. Calorie Mate is sort of Japan's version of an energy bar. It tastes like cardboard (I actually mean that literally), bears no resemblance to any food ever found or created by natural means, and according to the package, is 100% nutritionally balanced. It is the yin to an energy bar's yang; instead of being a slab of congealed sludge which is impossible to chew and guaranteed to give you stomach cramps and constipation, Calorie Mate is a crumbly, moisture-less cookie bar that can't be swallowed without the aid of at least half a liter of water, and is guaranteed to give you stomach cramps and constipation. It's also the only food other than corn soup sold in any of my school's five vending machines.

Needless to say, between the lack of sleep and the rock in my stomach, I'm not having a very good day. I demand super-fun tiems tomorrow to make up for it! >:| [edit] Okay, finding out that my will-call angel got all the protos I wanted AND a bar of Xmvlzencab helps quite a bit, too.

Oh, and I must amend my post from yesterday. Today she spent only half the day on facebook. The other half was spent on twitter.

I've been so busy lately that I didn't have a chance to watch Supernatural for about the last month and a half, and only just now caught up. And WOW, Zachariah totally said that Sam and Dean are "erotically co-dependent on each other" instead of "neurotically". I am not even kidding.

Also, Crowley needs to start hitting on Castiel yesterday.

Life is still stressy, but actually, I'm currently pleased with myself because I rode my bike all the way to Kamigamo Jinja and back! Between the giant hill and the monthly massive blood loss, I didn't think I was going to be able to do it.

Will bitch about stressful things later, if I ever find the time.
chocolate_chip: (Default)
Why so much stressssssss T___T
chocolate_chip: (Default)
I'm getting increasingly pissed off at Sagawa Kyuubin. Lately they haven't been redelivering during my scheduled time, and this morning, the first chance I've had to sleep in in an incredibly stressful two weeks, the driver called me FOUR TIMES between 7:00 and 8:30. And when I finally answered the phone, he was really rude and DEMANDED to know when he could deliver the package. Fuck you. >:E
